ChatGPT Free vs NotebookLM: Source Notes

Compare ChatGPT Free with NotebookLM, now documented as Gemini Notebook, for a small source set, checking citations, conflicts and unsupported claims.

DECISION FIRST

Short verdict

Consider NotebookLM’s source-set workflow, currently documented by Google as Gemini Notebook, when the answer must stay within selected documents. ChatGPT Free can support broader assistance and file work, but you must specify and verify the evidence boundary. A citation is a route to checking a claim, not proof that the interpretation is correct.

ChatGPT Free and NotebookLM answer different workflow needs when you have a small set of documents. An open-ended assistant can help develop questions and reorganize ideas. A notebook built around selected sources makes the evidence boundary more explicit. The right choice depends on whether you want to explore beyond the documents or explain what those documents actually say.

Google’s current help center uses the name Gemini Notebook for the source-chat workflow historically associated with NotebookLM. This guide retains the familiar search term and links to the current official documentation, checked on October 8, 2026. It does not report a hands-on citation benchmark.

Build a small source set with a known disagreement

Use two authorized, non-sensitive documents: a fictional workshop plan and a revision note. The plan says the session starts at 10:00; the revision says it starts at 10:30. Label the files and their dates. Ask which time is current and which source establishes the change.

An acceptable answer should identify the conflict, use the revision date and cite the supporting passage. Simply quoting the first source is insufficient. This tests interpretation as well as retrieval.

Question Check in either workflow
Which sources are active? The intended plan and revision are both included
Which claim is newer? Dates and scope of the revision are inspected
What supports the answer? The citation opens the relevant passage
What remains unknown? Missing duration or venue details are not invented

Treat citations as inspection tools

Google documents citations and source selection in Gemini Notebook chat. That is a useful mechanism for tracing an answer to its inputs. It does not resolve an ambiguous document automatically. Open each decisive citation and check whether the quoted passage supports the conclusion, rather than merely mentioning the same subject.

With ChatGPT Free, file uploads are documented, but an instruction to use only supplied material still needs verification. Ask it to distinguish “stated in the files” from “suggested next step.” If you request outside research as well, keep that evidence separate from the workshop documents.

Preserve the source boundary in your notes

Write the final note in three parts: the conclusion, the supporting source and the remaining uncertainty. For the fictional workshop, that might be the revised start time, the revision note’s dated passage and an unanswered question about the finish time.

Do not turn an assistant’s suggested schedule into a fact attributed to the original plan. When you update a document, check whether the service is using the current version or an earlier imported copy. Source-grounded work is only as current as its selected inputs.

Choose based on the next question

Use the notebook workflow when most questions should stay inside a defined source set and citation navigation matters. Use ChatGPT Free when you also need brainstorming, drafting or broader help, while explicitly marking those additions. Neither workflow removes your responsibility to inspect the document and its date.

For a different research decision, see ChatGPT Free vs Perplexity. Uploaded-source notes and live-web research need different evidence checks.

Sources and freshness

This is source-informed editorial analysis, not a hands-on benchmark. Proposed tests are evaluation suggestions, not reported results. Features, prices, limits, and policies can change; verify current official terms before acting.
